LO1 Analysis of Mise en scene
Game Over- Tinchy Stryder featuring Giggs, Professer Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example and Chipmunk(2010) Music Video Directed by unknown. UK: Take Over Entertainment. Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wpCf0FsZKQ [last accessed: 24/9/14]
Purpose, Genre, meaning, content and Form &
Style
I would pastiche the way that they made the
video look high quality by using lots of editing.
Purpose, Form
The purpose of this music video is to entertain,
this is done by quite a bland video to make the listener concentrate on the
music. This shows there is a lot of meaning in the words that they are saying.
The form for this is that it’s a music video. The genre for this is hip-hop/
rap genre, the main factor of a lot of this video is the stereotypical hand
gestures that come with the genre of the rap, this is because most rappers are
trying to express themselves through the hand gestures, it could also in some
cases connote to the artist being aggressive or frustrated.
Intended Audience
The preferred reading for Game Over is the rap/
hip hop fan base. Game over is a song written by Tinchey Stryder and features
Giggs, Professor Green, Tinie Tempah, Devlin, Example and Chipmunk. The music
video for Game Over is about showing the passion within the song not so much
about showing wealth and parties (In the video they don't move from a single
photo studio and they don't flash cash like other videos of this genre would),
these things stereotypical for the rap/ hip hop genre.
Content and meaning
Mise-en-scene
Location-The main acting location's denotation
is in a dimly lit photo studio but at the start of the video it shows the
artists playing rap star in a white room. The connotations for the main location
are that it represents for the glamorous rap scene and the importance of their
appearance of how they dress and look, it also represents verisimilitude. This
symbolises the fact that they see themselves as icons to their fans (this was
Dyers theory in 1975. Where as the connotation for the short location in the
beginning is just simply to advertise a video game. The main location doesn't
typically go with the stereotype for rap music, but the beginning advertisement
does because a lot of rapper tend to advertise a brand they represent or
created in their videos( Dr Dre advertises Dre Beats).
Costume/makeup- The main artists costume is
the denotation of them wearing a costume of normal
looking clothes, they are not wearing any makeup. This costume connotes to
their confidence and dress style of their genre, this style of
dress connotes to the rap/ hiphop genre of music it also
symbolises how they live. This music video's costumes present dominance
which complies with John Bergers theory that men are the dominant/ powerful
gender because the artist are seen to be doing as they want when they wear
their casual clothes as a costume.
Props- The only props in this music video are
the microphones encoded to play the video game in the beginning,
this is iconography for rap. This connotes to the fact that they are
advertising a product in the video. This does comply with the aspect that rap
genre videos advertise brands and products.
Gestures- The denotation of the gestures that
the artists use are, that they uses very flamboyant arm movements to express
their lyrics. These gestures are a typical connotation for rap videos because
rappers like to express certain emotions through gestures, aggression is
usually the reason for hand gestures. A few of the rappers in this music video
are known for their extravagant gesturing while rapping, this is a prime
example of 1975 Richard Dyers star persona theory.
Colours/lighting- The denotation of the
colours/lighting in the video is that there isn't very many bright colours just
greys and dark colours and the lighting is low key, I know this because there
are shadows. The connotation of this is that the dark colours and low key
lighting represents that he has a very down to earth and is just and ordinary
person like us. The low key lighting and dark colours symbolise the rap/hip hop
stereotype. These colours and lighting also represent the darker emotions and
in some cases can symbolise something from being from the heart.
The narrative structure for this is purely
performance as said by Carlson (1999). But it is structured so that when the
video starts it reveals the artists slowly then begins to circle them. This is
voyeurism because the artist doesn’t know were watching him.
Camera work
The camera shot types are very limited in this video, they are mainly mid shots or close ups this denotes to the artists being centre of attention the connotations of this is that it makes them look self absorbed or wanting to be taken seriously.
Their are camera movements such as panning shots where the camera pans around the artist in a circle, the denotation of this is that it gives the artist a 3 dimensional look and adds movement to the video, this connotes to the artists wanting to be seen as real, in other words down to earth.
The shot focus isn't very prominent in this video, it is used to emphasis the artist in the foreground this is shallow depth focus.
Editing
This video Jump Cuts every 30 seconds, this denotes to when its circling the artist it suddenly jumps to a different angle, the connotation of this is that it symbolises the importance of the artist as some sort of ideal self. Every time the screen jump cuts its flashes white in a very strobe like way, it often happens to the beat aswell, this denotes to adding effect to the jump cuts and creating a visual rythem, the connotation of this is that it will sub consciously stick the song in your head making it the ideal form of advertisement. In this video lens flares happen a lot, this happens randomly throughout the video, the dennotation of this is that draws the viewers attention.
Genre
The genre for this music video is hip hop, I know this because the artists are rappers a singing or talking to the rhythm in a certain way that typically constitutes to rhyming.
Sound
This music video contain both diegetic and none diegetic sound, the non-diegetic sound is present at the beginning when it appears that the music is coming from the video game that the articts are playing. It then goes into degetic sound when the actual music video becomes present. The music in this video evokes a happy and excitable emotions.

Waiting all night- Rudimental(2013)
Music Video. Directed by Nez KHAMMAL UK: Unknown. Available at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M97vR2V4vTs . [Last accessed: 25/9/14]
Purpose, Genre, meaning, content and Form &
Style
I would pastiche the way that the music video
was based around the life of a real person and what happened to them.
Purpose, Form
The purpose of this music video is to both
entertain and inform the viewer, they entertain the viewer by presenting an
interesting story and they are informing about the dangers of stunts. This is
very intriguing because it is unusual that a music video would mix this two
purposes. It takes the form of a narrative type music video because it
describes a story of a person and their accident that changed their life, this
too is unusual because their aren't very many music videos out there that use a
persons narrative to advertise their song. This music is part of the pop genre.
Intended Audience
The preferred reading for this video is pop and BMX
fans because it has a narrative based around BMX bikes and the music over the
top is pop music. The narrative for this doesn’t go along with the typical
stereotypes for pop videos because usually pop music videos are all performance
based where as Waiting all night has a storyline to the music video.
Content and meaning
Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene
There are four main acting locations in the
music videos, the city streets at the beginning the denotation of the city
streets are that it shows everyday life, the connotation of the streets are
that they symbolise freedom and their ability to do what they want when they
want. This is quite an iconic connotation of BMX culture. The second of
locations is the hospital; this denotes to the main character being injured
badly, the connotation of this is that it shows how dangerous his day to day
life is. The third location is his house the denotation of this is that he is
able to recover over time and the connotation of his house is that it suggests
that everything however bad is recoverable. The final main location is the
skate park at the end of the video, this denotes that he is able to do what he
want to do again after his recovery from his injury, this symbolises that even
if there is a tragic set back in life you will be able to do your dream still,
this is preferred reading.
The costumes in this music video are denoted to
be everyday clothes and hospital gowns, these connote to his everyday freedom
and his tragic injury. These aren't typical of the pop stereotype because its
not often that a pop music video is able to display a narrative so broad
that it would include a serious injury.
Props-There isn't many props in this video the
main ones include his BMX bike that he rides the denotation of this is that its
his hobby, the connotation of this is that he’s an able person with a dream.
Another would be his prosthetic leg that he gets during the video, the denotation
of this would be that he’s getting another chance to be able to walk, the
connotation of the leg would be that it symbolises second chances and good
fortune
Gestures- In this music video there isn't many
gestures because it is a narrative not a performance video. One of the gestures
is dancing this denotes to the person having a good time, the connotation of
this is that he’s enjoying himself and having lots of fun.
Colours and lighting- The light is high key
because it is set during the day time, the denotation of this is that it is his
everyday activities that get filmed and none of these are at night time. The
connotation of this is that emotions are high and even when he has his accident
he still has a positive attitude towards life.
The narrative structure for this is Tzvetan
Todorovs structure because there is a point of equilibrium when he’s riding his
BMX throughout the city, then there is a disruption when he has his leg
amputated and cannot ride his BMX anymore, they take action to this by getting
a prosthetic leg, so that restores equilibrium.
Camera work
Camera work
The camera work in this video all relates to the narrative
for the video. Throughout the beginning of the music video it
uses point of view shots and close ups, this denotes to how it it is
being seen, the connotations of this is to show it through a persons
eyes. The music video also uses a lot of low angle shots this denotes to
the camera being below the characters, the connotations of this is that
it shows that he is overcoming his problem, it go's
really well with the narrative for this music video. There are also
many group shots, this denotes to the main character being with his
friends, the connotation of this is that the main character wants to be
around friends after his accident, he feels insecure and paranoid.
The camera is also used many times in a handheld way
throughout the music video, this denotes to giving the camera some
movement, the connotation of this is that it helps give the watcher a
personal feel or connection to the character. Another movement is the
pan shot, it is used throughout to follow the BMX's on the ramps or when
they are riding through the city, this denotes to the BMX life, riding
through the city streets, the connotation of this is that it symbolises
freedom. The least used camera movement is the tracking shot, this shot
is used many times throughout the city scenes to follow the characters
through the city alleys, this denotes to camera acting like another BMX
rider, the connotation of this is that it makes us (the audience) feel
as though we are part of the action.
The camera focus varies over the video, is moves from
shallow depth to deep depth focus often this is called full focus,
the denotation of this is that the constant focus change confuses the
viewer, the connotation of this is that it could represent
disorientation as if he is still dizzy after his accident.
Editing
This music video doesn't have any editing techniques other
than cutting, this is because the music video is presented in cinéma
Vitré form and if the video had been edited it would have take away from
the realism of the narrative.
Genre
The genre for this music video is house/ pop music. I know this because its music video is a narrative, this is typically used in pop videos.
Sounds
The sounds in this video are mostly non-diegetic sounds that come from the narrative. Also the actual music for the video is played over the top over the narrative. These sounds create a suprised reaction from the audience.

Skepta featuering JME(2014) Music Video. Directed by unknown. UK:
Capitol. Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyONbqggasY [Last
accessed: 26/9/14 ]
Pastiche, Purpose, Genre, meaning, content and
Form & Style
I
would pastiche the idea of the overlaying of the DJ and his decks while
Skepta's rapping in the background.
Purpose, Form
The
purpose of this music video is to entertain by showing how they make their
music. Where they came from and how they went from nothing to something; it is
for this purpose that Skepta became so popular in the grime scene. This music
video takes the form of an edited video which overlays the original video to
create a unique and psychedelic look. The under-laying video shows the area and
neighborhood that the artist is representing while the overlaying is of the
artist and his DJ making the music on his decks. The decks are made out of bear
boxes and old grocery storage boxes this shows them to not care about the
latest equipment and only cares about the music, all of these aspects represent
the artist to be a down to earth artist who loves what his does and doesn't do
it for the money . This music is part of the grime/ hip-hop/ rap genre this is
a very popular mix of genres
Intended Audience
The preferred reading for this music video is
hip hop/rap fans and the grime scene because the name Skepta is huge in the
grime and rap scene. The music video is more about showing how real their love
for music is than showing the usual denotations of rap videos (Money, gold
chains, fast cars).
Content and meaning
Mise-en-scene
The main acting location in this video denotes to
a back yard of someone’s house, the connotations of this is that it symbolises
the gritty streets of which their music came from. This usually shown to be
quite an iconic factor for rap and grime music video but it isn’t a typical
aspect in the hip hop stereotype. It is only set in one location throughout the
video.
The costumes in this video denote to casual wear
or street wear, this connotes to the idea of the grime scene and freedom within
music. The idea of street wear is common with music video of the hip hop
stereotype. The casual wear also symbolises that they are down to earth people
and even though they do have excess cash they don't flaunt it, this is unusual
in the hip hop stereotype because usually they advertise their wealth by
wearing such brands as Louis Viton and Versace. They don’t wear any makeup.
The only props they have are the DJ decks and a
microphone, this denotes to a basic music kit, but the connotation of this is
that it doesn’t take fancy equipment and lots of money to make great music.
Gestures-In this video there are many different
gestures that the artist does and these denote to a way of moving with the rhythm of his music, the
connotation of these gestures are that they symbolise how he feels, in other
words he’s expressing his emotions through gestures. This is common with a
music video of this genre because their may not be a lot of performance (dancing)
to express their emotion with, so instead they do it through gesturing.
Colours and lighting- The lighting is low key in
this video. you can tell this because there are shadows behind the people in
the video. This denotes to it being late evening light. The connotation of this
is that it symbolises that the streets of London may be gloomy but they will
always represent them. The colours in this video vary, the foreground video
colours are bright whereas the background video colours are very neutral. This denotes
to the way the two videos have been edited together, the connotation of these
colours are that the normal life for the artist (the background video) is very
boring, this is shown by the neutral colours; whereas the foreground video
shows the artists life when he’s making music in bright colours this symbolises
his music life is a lot more exciting and colourful than his normal life.
This music videos narrative structure is purely
performance(Carlson 1999). It has a very basic structure where the video is
faded in at the beginning then faded out at the end.
Camera work
Camera work
The camera shots in this video are varied because the
video is mostly taken from a handheld camera. One example of these shots
is a close up of skeptas face, this denotes to him getting up close and
personal with his fans, the connotation of this is that it helps put
his face on his brand. Another shot is the group shot, this denotes to
him being with his crew BBK in the streets of London, the connotation of
this is to help advertise his crews name and connect his brand to his
crews brand. The most prominent camera shot in this video is the two
shot that is edited to float around in front of the other shots for the
whole video.
Their is a lot of camera movement such as a hand held
camera, this camera movement is used in the background shots, it makes
the footage feel homemade and contrasts to the foreground footage giving
it a more professional look.
Shot focus is used very effectively during this video,
it's shallow depth focus, this is used all the way through, it makes the
background shot become unfocused and the foreground become focused.
Editing
This music video also doesn't feature a lot of editing, this is because the video is supposed to represent social realism. One of the editing techniques that is used is Cromekey, this is the green screen that is used so that only the for ground can be seen, this technique is used to show the DJ and his decks with the artist floating around the screen over top some old footage, this denotes to the artist wanting to represent his old rapping ways, this connotes to him wanting to symbolise the importance of keeping in touch with his past before he became a big time artist.
Thsi video also features fade transitions between scenes, this denotes to the transitions being low budget or old, the connotation of this is that Skepta wants present the fact that you don't need high budget editing to make a music video fit its genre.
Genre
The genre for this music video is Hip-hop, this i know because the
artist is well known with the grime community, grime is a sub genre of
hip-hop.
Sounds
Sounds
The sounds in this video are diegetic because we see the rapper rapping to the music in the music video.
Do I wanna know?- Arctic
Monkeys(2013) Music Video. Directed by Danny WILSON UK:Blinkink.
Available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOSxM0rNPM . [Last

Pastiche, Purpose, Genre, meaning, content and
Form & Style
I would pastiche the way that in this video they
used animation to entertain the viewer/listener.
Purpose, Form
The purpose of this video is to entertain the
viewer while they are listening to the music. The video entertains by using
animation to put emphasis on the lyrics. This is an animated music video, I can
tell because there is no live action in the music video its all in black and
white picture animations. This style music is part of the Indie/Rock genre, I
know this because the artist 'Arctic Monkeys' are a big band in this genre and
have dominated the genre for a long time now, but my main way of telling is
from the lyrics, they are quite abstract but they are telling a story about
love this is usually a key factor to indie music and the rock part is the
instrumental in the song.
Intended Audience
The preferred reading for this music video is
indie/ rock fans that appreciated the Arctic Monkeys way of merging the genres
together. This music video is about showing how indie music doesn't have to go
with the stereotypical music video (skinny jeans, playing instruments, Smoking)
it can go with animation too.
Content and meaning
Mise-en-scene
There isn't really a main acting location
because its an animation but the place where most of the animating occurs is in
the centre of the screen a long the music wave forms. This denotes to the
video's animations going exactly along with the music. The connotation of this
is that it’s proving that animations can go along with all different
"forms" of music.
As this video is a animation there isn't any
costumes. The connotation of this is that it doesn't matter what people where
we shouldn't just see them for how they look.
There aren't any props involved in this video.
There are very few gestures in this video. The
gestures that there are, are mostly of women doing dancing. This denotes to
women keeping the attention of the viewer. The connotation of this is that it
objectifies women, this is a prime example for Mullrey’s theory of Male Gaze,
1975.
The colours in this video are all black and
white, this is to symbolise originality and that’s is very plain. This connotes
to how a music video can be bland and plain but still evoke an emotive
response. In some parts of the video their is flashes of yellows, reds, blues,
this connotes to importance that is places on the pictures with colours. The
lighting is the same throughout, because there is no lighting.
This music video is performance (Carlson 1999),
but at the beginning it is shown to be just simple sound forms then it slowly
becomes a performance.
Camera work
Camera work
The camera shots in this video are very few because it is
an animation. The most comon is the group shot because most of the
animations show people in groups. It also contains mid shots and close
ups, both of these are used at excess to set the scene and help the
viewer to understand the video.
Their is lots of camera movement in this music video. One
would be a pan shot, this shot is used to follow a character or certain
animation within the music video, this movement is used mid way through
the video to create effect and add realism to the animations. Tilt shots
are also used in this music video, this is where the camera tilts from
feet to head slowly, this shot connotes to the character being a
dominant and overpowering character. Another movement type is the zoom
shot that is used to slowly get closer to an object.
There is no changes in focus in this video.
Editing
There isn't a lot of editing in this video because the
whole video is one big animation. This video uses one editing technique
that covers the whole video, this is that it is edited so that it goes
along with the music that is playing in the video.
Genre
The genre for this video is Indie, i know this because its a very unusual video that only a hipster band would use.
Sounds
The sounds in this video are diegetic in the beginning because we see the wave forms that are created by the sounds, but as it goes into the video the sounds become non-diegetic sounds because they are played in the background to the animations.

To Many Man- Boy
Better Know(2009) Music Video. Directed by unknown. UK: BBK. Available
at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKDixFhvCAU [last accessed:30/9/14]
Pastiche, Purpose, Genre, meaning, content and
Form & Style
I would
take the idea of the dark, grimy, down to the streets look if I was to make a
music video.
Purpose, Form
The purpose of this music video is to entertain
by demonstrating the kind of life the artist lives on a day today basis, this
aspect of the artists video attracts a large audience because its a glamorous
life style and suggesting the cliché stereotype. This music videos form has
quite a rough, raw look this is a common look for hip-hop/ rap videos. The
genre for this music video is grime/rap, I can tell this from the music video
because it has the stereotypical look for the rap genre, but also the music
style is unique to the grime genre which is mainly more about the lyrical
aspects instead of the music, where as the hip hop is genre is more of about
both the music and the lyrics.
Intended Audience
The preferred reading for this music video is
hip hop/ grime fans because it caters to the typical stereotype for this genre,
(money, women, clubbing,). The group Boy Better Know are a large group within
the grime community so their preferred reading is likely to be more towards the
grime genre fans. Also with Boy Better Know being a large group it shows their
dominance and this relates to male stereotypes.
Content and meaning
Mise-en-scene
The main acting location in this video is the
nightclub they are at. This denotes to them having fun dancing and rapping. The
connotation of this is that it appeals to the genres stereotype. There are
other less main acting areas which are just rooms with flashing lights. These denote
to a basic secluded room where they can concentrate on rap. The connotation of
this is that it allows them the concentrate more about the music and less about
the lifestyle.
The costumes in this seem to denote to casual
party clothes. The connotation of this is that it shows they have control of
their lifestyle. One of the artist wear face paint in the video, this denotes
to him covering his face, the connotation for this is that it makes him more
mysterious.
The props in this video seem to mainly denote to
party items ( red cups, bottles of alcohol). The connotation of this is that it
symbolises them having a good time while making their music.
The gestures in this video are all gestures
based on hip hop so mostly hand gestures and dancing. These denote to the
artists having a good time being serious about their music but not so much
about their video. The connotation of these gestures are that the artists are
able to understand each others style of music and work with it.
The lighting in the video is low key but
occasionally flashes high key when the strobes are on, the denotation of this
is that they are in a dark nightclub club with flashing lights, this connotes
to the music being very serious but with a twist of fun.
This music videos narrative structure is
performance (Carlson 1999) but is structured in a way so that the artists are
in a big group shot one moment and then in a shot by themselves away from the
group of people.
Camera work
The camera shots in this video vary lots. A common shot is the mid shot, this is used with moderation in this video, this shot is usually used to help the audience establish a view on the character, denoting to us knowing who the character is. Another shot used is the close up shot, this is so the artist can get his face recognised and connected to his brand. One of the least used shots in this video is the two shot, this is because the group performing is this video ( Boy Better Know) are known to be a huge group of artists not just a duo. The most used shot type in this music video is the group shot because the artists featured in this video want to get all their faces related to one another through the brand name.
The video uses mainly three types of camera movement. The camera tilt is one of these, this is so that the camera shows the women dancing, it gives to the idea of the male gaze (laura Mullvey). Another of these camera movements is the rocking camera, because when it does this it provides us with the feel that we are dancing along in the club with them. The final of these many shot movements is the whip pan shot, this is where the camera pans around very fast and often becomes unfocused, this is used to show the excitement of being with these artists in a club.
The focus is often shallow depth so that we are able to see the artists face clearly
Editing
This video has a lot of editing. One editing technique that is used is the jump cut, this is because it shows the artist from different angles, this denotes to the artist wanting to be centre of attention, this connote to the artist feeling important. Another is the cross cut, this is used to show one artist in a club dancing but then it cuts to another artist dancing in a defferent part of the club but both of these scenes are taking place at the same time.
Genre
The genre for this is hip-hop, i know this because the music video is very typical of a video of this genre (dancing, drinking, women, gold).
Sounds
The sounds in this video are diegetic because the artists are clearly rapping them in front of us. This make the audience react with happiness.
